Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) has joined hands with GAIL (India) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to turn urban solid waste into compressed biogas (CBG) in six municipal corporations across the state.
The agreement will see the establishment of CBG plants in Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Dhamtari. GAIL will be responsible for setting up plants in Ambikapur, Raigarh, and Korba, while BPCL will handle the ones in Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Dhamtari.
The project aims to process around 350 metric tonnes of urban solid waste daily, along with 500 metric tonnes of surplus biomass, to produce approximately 70 metric tonnes of compressed biogas every day. An investment of ₹600 crore by GAIL and BPCL will support the project, which is also expected to bring the state an annual tax revenue of ₹6 crore from production and sales.
Officials highlighted that the initiative will promote organic farming through by-products generated at the plants. It will also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with efforts to achieve net-zero goals.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai appreciated the project and said, “This initiative is a big step towards creating a clean and sustainable environment. It will not only help protect the environment and manage waste effectively but also provide new job opportunities for the people.”
The Chief Minister asked officials to begin work on the plants without any delay and ensure that they are completed in time.
