Karnataka: BWSSB plans major biogas project to turn sewage into revenue and clean fuel

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is preparing to roll out a large biogas project to convert sewage sludge into compressed biogas, aiming to boost revenue and expand the use of clean fuel in the city.

It plans to generate revenue more than Rs 120 crore in next 20 years.

Approved by the state cabinet, the project is expected to be among the largest in the country. It will process around 550 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage from five major treatment plants, according to an official statement, The Economic Times reported.

BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar said the project has been designed in a way that allows the board to earn additional income without making any upfront investment.

Under the plan, biogas that is currently used within treatment plants or burned off will be upgraded into compressed biogas (CBG) that meets national standards. This fuel can then be supplied to city gas networks or used as a cleaner option for transport.

The project will be carried out under a public-private partnership model, with the private partner investing about Rs 85 crore and handling operations, while BWSSB will provide land within its facilities.

Officials said the initiative is expected to support cleaner energy use and better waste management, and could serve as a model for similar projects in other cities.
