Shanghai Electric develops aviation fuel from waste oil, achieves global first

Shanghai: Shanghai Electric has announced a major breakthrough in sustainable aviation fuel, with its subsidiary achieving what it describes as a world-first result in converting waste oils into jet fuel.

The project, led by Shanghai Boiler Works, has successfully produced 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using waste oils and fats as the only raw material. The company said the fuel can be used directly in aircraft engines without blending it with conventional petroleum-based fuels, Bitget reported.

The initiative is part of a broader programme focused on key technologies and pilot testing of sustainable aviation fuel. Officials said the project is scheduled to begin pilot operations in September this year, with stable operations expected by the end of the year.

Once operational, the pilot plant is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of about 5,000 tonnes of oil-based SAF.

The development highlights growing efforts to turn waste materials into cleaner aviation fuel, as the industry looks for ways to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
