ATF rules amended : India allows synthetic fuel blending

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a notification amending the Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Order, 2001, allowing blending with synthetic fuels. The move is aimed at promoting cleaner and alternative aviation energy sources.

The new order, called the Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Amendment Order, 2026, will come into force on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, which was April 17, 2026.

According to the notification, the new definition of “aviation turbine fuel” includes a complex mixture of hydrocarbons conforming to IS 1571 specifications or its blend with synthesised hydrocarbons as specified in IS 17081.

The notification also states that the principal order was originally published in the Gazette of India on March 31, 2001, and was subsequently amended on December 26, 2014.
