Electrosteel Castings Limited (ECL) has inaugurated a new biogas plant at its Srikalahasthi Works, marking a major step toward sustainable waste management and renewable energy use. The facility can process 500 kilograms of organic waste every day, producing 18 cubic meters of biogas.
The plant primarily uses kitchen and canteen waste from the facility. Through anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down organic material without oxygen, it generates biogas—a combination of methane and carbon dioxide—and produces a nutrient-rich by-product that can be used as natural fertilizer for local farms.
“The biogas plant focuses on generating renewable energy and promoting sustainability,” said S N Goswami, CEO of Electrosteel – Srikalahasthi Works. “It not only helps solve the issue of organic waste disposal but also supports environmental safety. This project shows how teamwork and forward-thinking can lead to a greener future,” he added.
The plant’s daily output of biogas is mainly put to use in supporting canteen cooking.
“This biogas plant testifies to our commitment toward a cleaner environment. By converting waste into energy, we are solving environmental problems and building self-sufficiency. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to converting waste into a valuable resource for a sustainable future,” said Rajiv Prakash, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, ECL SW.
Electrosteel is planning to create similar biogas units at other places to add to its renewable energy resources and bring better environmental equilibrium.
