Philippines: Proposed biodiesel ordinance could help Cebu City manage used cooking oil waste

Cebu City: A proposed biodiesel ordinance could help Cebu City improve the collection and disposal of used cooking oil and grease trap waste from food establishments, City Councilor Mikel Rama said, Politiko reported.

Rama said he received a copy of the proposed measure from lawyers Gerard Joe Binghay Carillo and former Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo.

The draft ordinance would set rules for collecting, recycling and disposing of used cooking oil and waste from grease traps.

Rama said the measure could help stop establishments from dumping such waste into drainage systems, where it can block waterways and contribute to flooding.

“By addressing improper waste disposal, this initiative will play a crucial role in preventing clogged drainage, mitigating floods, and protecting our environment,” Rama said in a Facebook post.

He thanked the two lawyers for putting forward the proposal and said it could provide Cebu City with a sustainable way to manage the waste.

“I deeply appreciate their proactive proposal and the positive, sustainable impact this can bring to Cebu City,” he said.
