Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has inaugurated its advanced UGX 37 billion (UGX is Ugandan Shilling) biomass plant, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
During the biomass plant commissioning on Tuesday, UBL Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo emphasized, “With the launch of this Biomass plant, we have moved closer to achieving this goal, as the plant will reduce our carbon emissions by 92%, equivalent to 8000 tonnes of CO2 per year.”
Kilonzo reiterated UBL’s commitment as a responsible corporate citizen to pursuing sustainable practices and initiatives that benefit both society and the environment.
The biomass plant reflects a substantial investment by UBL and significant progress in their journey towards decarbonization as outlined in their Society 2030: Spirit of Progress sustainability action plan. Fueled by locally sourced biomass materials, the plant underscores UBL’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and provides livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa, emphasized that by investing in the biomass plant, UBL is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also contributing to Uganda’s energy security and economic growth.
She highlighted that the biomass project is aligned with Uganda’s National Development Plan and Vision 2040, which prioritize sustainable development and environmental conservation.
