Green ammonia export from India to Japan: Tamil Nadu CM to lay foundation stone for Green Hydrogen project

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will lay the foundation stone for the state’s first Green Hydrogen project in Thoothukudi on Wednesday. This ceremony will be part of a larger event where foundation stones will be laid for 28 projects and 19 additional projects will be inaugurated. The combined value of these 47 projects is Rs 68,773 crore, and they are expected to create over 106,000 jobs.

Industries Minister TRB Rajaa provided details, noting that 19 projects worth Rs 17,614 crore will be inaugurated, generating 65,000 jobs. Additionally, the foundation stones will be laid for 27 projects valued at Rs 51,000 crore. Rajaa emphasized that these events demonstrate the state government’s commitment, under Chief Minister Stalin, to realize the projects initiated during the Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2024.

Following the signing of MoUs, a committee was established to implement these deals. The 47 projects include those signed during GIM as well as others from the 2021-2023 period, including those resulting from the Chief Minister’s foreign visits.

According to the news report by The New Indian Express, the Green Hydrogen project of Singapore-based Sembcorp would be one of the largest in the country to have been grounded and it will be coming up in around 80 acres to 100 acres of land in the VOC Port in Thoothukudi. The project is expected to generate 1,511 jobs.

This Green Hydrogen project is notable for its production of Green ammonia, which will be exported to Japan. The Heads of Terms (HoT) agreement was signed between Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line, solidifying a cross-border green ammonia supply partnership from India to Japan. This agreement represents the first such collaboration between the two nations, underscoring India’s growing prominence in the global green energy landscape. The plant is expected to produce an initial 200,000 tonnes of Green ammonia annually. This project is set to be the largest Green Hydrogen initiative in India, with other projects still in the planning or pilot stages.
