TruAlt Bioenergy Limited has received financial assistance of Rs 150 crore under the Government of India’s PM JI-VAN Yojana for its proposed commercial-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in Bagalkot, Karnataka, marking a major step in expanding domestic production of next-generation aviation fuels.
The approval was granted by the Centre for High Technology (CHT) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and is expected to support around 7 to 10 per cent of the project’s capital cost, improving commercial viability and accelerating execution, News Karnataka reported.
The development comes as India increases efforts to strengthen energy security, reduce carbon emissions and build domestic capabilities in cleaner fuel technologies, including sustainable aviation fuel.
The PM JI-VAN Yojana, or Jaiv Indhan–Vatavaran Anukool Fasal Awashesh Nivaran Yojana, was introduced to encourage commercial deployment of advanced biofuel technologies using renewable feedstocks, agricultural residues and low-carbon production pathways.
The proposed Bagalkot facility will have an annual production capacity of 10 crore litres of sustainable aviation fuel and is expected to become an important contributor to India’s emerging SAF supply network.
Unlike conventional aviation fuel, SAF is produced from renewable sources and offers lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, making it a key tool in reducing the environmental impact of air travel.
According to the company, the project is expected to support indigenous production of low-carbon aviation fuel, reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and contribute to India’s long-term energy transition and net-zero objectives.
The facility also aligns with India’s sustainable aviation roadmap, which targets SAF blending levels of 1 per cent by 2027, 2 per cent by 2028 and 5 per cent by 2030. Building domestic production capacity is expected to help address supply constraints and support these targets.
The project further complements global aviation decarbonisation efforts under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), as airlines worldwide increasingly seek access to sustainable fuel options.
Commenting on the approval, Managing Director Vijay Nirani said the project represents more than the addition of new manufacturing capacity and reflects the growing role of sustainable aviation fuel in the future energy mix.
He said the company remains committed to developing indigenous solutions that improve energy security while supporting environmental goals and thanked the Government of India for encouraging innovation and enabling commercialisation of advanced biofuel technologies.
TruAlt said it aims to leverage its experience in biofuel production, feedstock management and renewable energy operations to establish a strong position in the SAF segment.
Financial assistance under the PM JI-VAN Yojana will be released in stages based on project milestones and conditions outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement with the Centre for High Technology.
TruAlt currently operates an installed ethanol production capacity of 2,000 kilolitres per day and has expanded across multiple renewable fuel segments including ethanol, compressed biogas and sustainable aviation fuel as part of its long-term clean energy strategy.
The latest approval provides a significant boost to the company’s SAF plans and reflects the growing role of advanced biofuels in India’s transition to cleaner energy.
