The Philippines has taken a step toward developing its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry after the Board of Investments (BOI) and Island Skies Alliance Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding to support the growth of a local SAF ecosystem.
The agreement aims to position the country as a preferred destination for sustainable aviation fuel investments across the full value chain by bringing together resources, aligning initiatives and creating a coordinated development strategy focused on sustainability, innovation and inclusive growth, Manila Standard reported.
Officials said the Philippines has strong potential to emerge as a major player in sustainable aviation fuel due to the expansion of its aviation sector, availability of feedstock and a policy environment that supports industry development.
Board of Investments Managing Head Ceferino Rodolfo said investment in sustainable aviation fuel represents an investment in the country’s long-term future and highlighted the Philippines’ potential to become a global centre for SAF development.
According to industry representatives, the BOI is supporting these efforts through its participation in the National Biofuels Board SAF Committee, which works to strengthen investment promotion and support the country’s broader economic objectives.
Island Skies Alliance Chief Executive Junard Cruz said the opportunity for sustainable aviation fuel in the Philippines can only be fully realised through continued cooperation among industry participants.
Allan Rillera, Partnership and Collaboration Success Director at Island Skies Alliance, said the partnership is expected to accelerate industry development through investment attraction, policy support, capability building, stakeholder engagement and strategic collaboration.
Island Skies Alliance is a nonprofit organisation focused on advancing sustainable aviation fuel development in the Philippines through industry coordination, addressing market gaps and supporting commercially viable projects.
The partnership reflects the country’s broader effort to create a long-term foundation for sustainable aviation fuel production while strengthening its position in the emerging low-carbon aviation market.
