Bhubaneswar to boost biomass utilisation through scientific processing of green waste

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has launched an initiative to strengthen biomass utilisation by appointing a dedicated agency to collect and scientifically process green waste generated from parks across the city.

The agency will collect biomass in the form of grass clippings, fallen leaves, tree branches, twigs, flower waste, weeds, pruned branches and other biodegradable horticultural waste from parks managed by the BDA, The New Indian Express reported.

Officials said the initiative aims not only to keep parks clean but also to ensure that the biomass generated is scientifically processed instead of being discarded.

The BDA manages around 50 major parks in Bhubaneswar, including IG Park, Biju Patnaik Park, APJ Abdul Kalam Park, Madhusudan Das Park, Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra Park and Buddha Jayanti Park. Together, these parks attract nearly 40,000 visitors every day and generate a significant quantity of green biomass.

The collected biomass is expected to support the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposed 50-tonne-per-day green waste processing plant, where lignocellulosic biomass such as leaves, branches and other plant residues will be converted into value-added products, including smokeless charcoal.

Officials said the integration of biomass collected from BDA-managed parks with the proposed processing facility will help improve green waste management while promoting the productive use of biomass resources in the city.
