Cyberabad civic body plans green waste-to-bio-briquette plant

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) plans to turn the city’s tree-pruning and horticultural waste into renewable industrial fuel by setting up a bio-briquette processing plant under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The proposed facility will process at least 5 tonnes of green waste per day initially, with scope for expansion based on the volume of waste generated within the corporation’s limits.

Tree-pruning waste, horticultural waste, avenue plantation residues and other biodegradable green waste will be converted into bio-briquettes, which can be used as an alternative fuel in industrial applications.

The project is proposed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and aims to reduce the open burning and dumping of green waste in landfills while creating a commercially useful product.

Under the proposed arrangement, CMC will provide suitable land, facilitate the supply of municipal green waste and support electricity connections and required administrative and statutory clearances.

The selected private partner will be responsible for designing, installing and commissioning the plant, besides providing machinery, equipment and manpower. It will also operate and maintain the facility, process the waste, ensure quality and environmental compliance, and market the bio-briquettes.

The private partner will also facilitate the registration, monitoring and monetisation of carbon credits generated by the project.

CMC is considering a commercial model under which the corporation and private partner would share net operational profits and carbon-credit revenue. The arrangement would not follow a conventional waste purchase or supply contract, with both parties instead sharing the outcomes generated by the project.

The corporation plans to invite firms with experience in biomass processing, waste management, renewable energy and bio-briquette manufacturing.

If implemented, the project could help reduce pressure on landfills and curb open burning of green waste while creating a potential revenue stream for CMC and converting urban biomass into renewable industrial fuel.
