New Delhi: The Centre has tightened domestic manufacturing requirements for electric buses and trucks under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, requiring more key electric drivetrain components to be made in India from April 1, 2027, ANI reported.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries amended the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) for M2 and M3 category electric buses and N2 and N3 category electric trucks through two notifications issued on September 3. The revised requirements will come into force after their publication in the Official Gazette.
For electric buses, the updated rules require traction motors to be manufactured in India from September 1, including rotor and stator assembly, bearings, enclosure, connectors and cable fitting. From April 1, 2027, domestic manufacturing will also have to cover the fitting of magnets and shafts.
The government has also introduced additional requirements for traction motor controllers, including inverters. From April 2027, their manufacture in India will have to include the assembly of electronic components, semiconductors and connectors on printed circuit boards. High-voltage connectors, cables, heat sinks and enclosures will also have to be fitted in India, along with software or firmware installation.
Similar requirements will apply to N2 and N3 electric trucks from April 2027. Their traction motors will have to include domestically manufactured magnets, rotors, stators, shafts, bearings, enclosures, connectors and cable fittings.
For integrated traction motor and transmission systems, the rules will additionally cover the fitting of the transmission and transmission controller.
The revised rules also require traction motor controllers, including inverters, for electric trucks to be manufactured in India, with electronic components, semiconductors and connectors assembled on printed circuit boards from April 2027.
The latest notifications build on the PMP introduced for electric buses and trucks in 2025 and amended subsequently in 2025 and 2026, ANI stated.
