First compressed biogas (CBG) plant with a multi-distribution model, has begun the commercial offtake and injection of gas into the city gas distribution (CGD) network in Kaithal, Haryana (India). The plant, with a capacity of 10 tonnes per day (TPD), was developed by Demeter Agro Energies in collaboration with CEID Consultants and Engineering as the EPC partner, and is supported by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), reported ET Energy World.
This facility will deliver compressed biogas via MDPE-rated pipelines and stainless steel lines, while also supporting bottling through cylinder cascades. Currently, the plant supplies 4 TPD of CBG through the MDPE pipeline network. The plant’s total production capacity includes 25,000 cubic meters of raw biogas per day and 10 TPD of compressed biogas.
The plant’s commissioning ceremony was attended by several key officials from IGL, including Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, Managing Director; Mohit Bhatia, Director (Commercial); Sanjeev Kumar Bhatia, Executive Director; and Ashish Rajani, Deputy General Manager (Business Development), along with representatives from Demeter Agro Energies and CEID Consultants.
Located in Village Balwanti, Kaithal, the plant uses feedstock such as pressmud and spentwash, and also produces 50 TPD of fermented organic manure (FOM) for agricultural use.
Rajaram Prajapati, Chief Technical Officer and Founder of CEID Consultants and Engineering Pvt Ltd, emphasized the importance of technical compliance and safety in CBG production. He noted, “With decades of experience in gas infrastructure, we are committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety and gas purity. Currently, our system is achieving 97.54% purity, and we are on track to exceed 99% purity, while keeping the oxygen content consistently below 0.2%.”
He further highlighted the comprehensive safety and procedural measures implemented at the plant, covering aspects such as pressure ratings, gas quality, volume control, and integration with the CGD network. Prajapati also announced the upcoming launch of India’s first CBG-specific steel pipeline injection system, which will make the Kaithal plant a benchmark for best practices in design, safety, pressure management, and pipeline connectivity. This system will set the stage for the safe and efficient scaling up of CBG injection across India.
The CBG sector receives support from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and aligns with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission, promoting clean energy and waste-to-wealth initiatives.
