Ludhiana: Officials from the Punjab Energy Development Authority (PEDA) were pulled up during a review meeting on Friday regarding the progress of the Buddha Dariya rejuvenation project, reported The Times of India.
The meeting, held at the 225MLD Jamalpur sewage treatment plant, was convened by the Vidhan Sabha committee on Buddha Dariya and Ghaggar River and chaired by committee chairman and Ludhiana East MLA Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal.
PEDA officials were questioned over the delay in constructing a biogas plant at Tajpur Road, which has led to improper disposal of cow dung from the Tajpur Road dairy complex. Instead of being processed, the waste is being diverted to an effluent treatment plant, raising environmental concerns. Civic officials had earlier brought the issue to the attention of Governor Gulab Chand Kataria during his recent visit to the city.
“It is crucial to set up the biogas plant to prevent solid waste from entering pipelines meant for sewage,” officials emphasized, warning that untreated waste eventually reaches the Buddha Dariya.
PEDA officials assured that the biogas plant construction will commence by the end of this month.
During the meeting, civic officials were instructed to prevent the dumping of cow dung and untreated industrial waste into the Buddha Dariya.
The meeting was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, Atam Nagar MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu, Mayor Inderjit Kaur, and several other officials.
MLA Grewal reiterated the commitment to making Buddha Dariya pollution-free and praised Seechewal’s dedicated efforts in restoring its former glory.
