Metacon’s wholly owned Greek subsidiary, Metacon SA, has secured 188,018 euro in European Union funding for its participation in the PUREHY2+ project, which aims to develop an integrated system for producing high-purity hydrogen from biogas while capturing carbon dioxide on site, reported Alchem Pro.
The project will explore how existing biogas plants can be equipped to produce renewable hydrogen, creating an additional revenue stream for operators and expanding the use of locally available renewable resources.
Biogas is generated from organic waste at thousands of facilities across Europe. The PUREHY2+ initiative aims to develop technology capable of converting this biogas into hydrogen with a purity exceeding 99.97%, while separating carbon dioxide for capture during the process.
The project has a total budget of 1.63 million euro and will run for 36 months. Metacon’s share of the budget is 235,022 euro, of which 188,018 euro, or 80%, will be covered by the EU grant.
For Metacon, the project will support further development of its proprietary reforming technology, gas purification systems and system integration capabilities. It will also assess the potential to deploy these technologies at existing biogas facilities, enabling decentralised renewable hydrogen production without depending entirely on new, electricity-intensive production infrastructure.
PUREHY2+ builds on the earlier PUREHY project, under which the consortium developed and evaluated Greece’s first semi-pilot unit for producing and purifying hydrogen from biogas at the production site. The new project will advance that work towards a more integrated and adaptable solution for biogas plant operators.
Metacon President and Chief Executive Officer Christer Wikner said existing biogas facilities already have access to renewable feedstock and established production infrastructure, offering an opportunity to expand their output to include high-purity green hydrogen and captured biogenic carbon dioxide.
He added that the project would allow Metacon to advance its technology towards an integrated solution for existing biogas producers while strengthening its position in the wider hydrogen market.
