Xinjiang: China has launched a green hydrogen-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes and an investment of ¥11 billion in Yiwu County, Hami, Xinjiang, Hydrocarbon Engineering reported.
Dondel officially launched the project on September 20, 2026. The company described it as China’s first demonstration project to integrate green hydrogen with carbon-negative aviation kerosene production and the country’s largest demonstration project using this technology pathway.
The project will include 2 GW of wind power capacity and a 50,000-tonne-per-year green hydrogen production line. It will capture and use 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually and convert the captured carbon into 100,000 tonnes of green SAF.
The project aims to establish an integrated industrial chain linking green electricity, green hydrogen, carbon capture and green aviation kerosene production, with the overall process designed to achieve negative carbon emissions.
Dondel Energy General Manager Xie Menghao said the company’s 1,000-tonne pilot project using the same technology pathway passed an assessment in Meishan, Sichuan, in August 2026. An expert panel rated the technology as internationally leading and said it fills a gap in China’s domestic capabilities.
A 10,000-tonne-scale unit began commissioning in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, in September. The Yiwu project represents the next stage of the company’s planned scale-up, moving from thousands of tonnes to tens of thousands and eventually hundreds of thousands of tonnes.
Dondel expands hydrogen business across the value chain
Dondel has been active in the hydrogen energy equipment sector since 2018 and has developed into a manufacturer and engineering services provider covering hydrogen production, storage, transportation, refuelling and applications.
Its business includes hydrogen equipment manufacturing, engineering construction and gas sales, serving sectors such as hydrogen energy, petrochemicals, power, steel, transportation and aerospace.
The SAF project marks the company’s expansion into downstream applications, supported by its existing hydrogen equipment capabilities.
Dondel has four compressor product lines: diaphragm compressors, liquid-driven compressors, ionic liquid-sealed compressors and reciprocating piston compressors.
Its diaphragm compressor can reach a maximum pressure of 90 million Pa, with hydrogen output purity above 99.999%. The company says it is China’s first domestically produced ultra-high-pressure diaphragm compressor. Its ionic liquid-sealed compressor has a discharge pressure exceeding 100 million Pa and is described by the company as the world’s first independently developed product of its kind.
The company’s compressor portfolio is designed for applications ranging from hydrogen refuelling stations and hydrogen production plants to industrial and specialty gases.
Dondel has also developed hydrogen pumps, including liquid hydrogen plunger pumps for liquefied gases such as liquid hydrogen, liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen. Its hydrogen circulation pumps and ejectors are designed for fuel-cell systems and feature an all-static structure, zero maintenance and high reliability.
The company’s end-use products include the PowerMax Super Hydrogen Station, which combines ultra-fast charging with gaseous and liquid hydrogen refuelling as well as off-grid cooling and heating.
It has also developed an integrated hydrogen production and refuelling system combining hydrogen production, storage, compression and dispensing, along with the QuickFill Liquid Hydrogen Refuelling Station, which occupies less than 20 square metres and can complete a full fill in under three minutes.
Dondel also offers a natural gas hydrogen blending system designed to support hydrogen blending ratios ranging from 3% to 30%.
