Biogas gains ground as hotels turn waste into fuel amid rising LPG costs

Bengaluru: Faced with rising LPG prices and increasing waste disposal costs, hotels and restaurants across the city are turning to biogas as a practical alternative, aiming to convert food waste into fuel and reduce operating expenses.

The shift comes after new rules introduced by Bangalore Solid Waste Management Ltd., which cap wet waste disposal charges at ₹12 per kg under an empanelled vendor system. While rates can be negotiated, bulk waste generators fear vendors may push prices higher, adding to their financial burden, The Times of India reported.

The hospitality sector, which generates nearly 40 percent of the city’s total waste, is now looking at converting food waste into energy for kitchen use. Most hotels fall under the bulk waste category, producing more than 100 kg of waste daily.

Earlier, waste disposal was handled through fixed payments to vendors. However, the revised pricing structure has prompted businesses to seek more cost-effective and sustainable options.

Industry representatives say the rising costs are becoming difficult to manage. The Bengaluru Hotels Association has begun exploring the setup of biogas plants to process food waste into fuel.

The association is planning decentralised units across different parts of the city to reduce transportation challenges and is seeking land support from the Greater Bengaluru Authority.

Officials have indicated openness to the idea. The authority said discussions had taken place earlier and that it is willing to consider proposals from the hotel industry.

With costs rising and sustainability becoming a priority, industry players see biogas as a practical way to cut expenses while managing waste more efficiently.
