ONGC awards 300 MW solar project as part of push toward 10 GW renewable capacity by 2030

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has advanced its renewable energy ambitions with the award of a 300 MW ISTS-connected solar power project, a major step toward its goal of installing 10 GW of green capacity by 2030. The project is expected to generate about 710 million units of renewable electricity annually.

The company announced the development on Friday in an X post, describing it as a significant milestone in its clean-energy transition and a contribution to India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The new solar installation is a core element of ONGC’s integrated plan to build 300 MW of solar and 300 MW of wind power for captive consumption across key operational centres, including Hazira, Uran and its group company OPaL. With this addition, ONGC expects its onshore green power consumption to rise from 6 per cent to 47 per cent, marking a substantial shift toward sustainable operations.

“To achieve its renewable energy target of 10 GW by 2030, ONGC has taken another major leap in its clean-energy journey by awarding a 300 MW ISTS-connected solar power project with the capacity to generate around 710 million units of green power annually. This milestone strengthens ONGC’s commitment to India’s national mission of 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030,” the company said in its post. It added that the project forms a key part of its integrated plan to develop 300 MW of solar and 300 MW of wind power for captive use across major hubs.

ONGC and its subsidiary ONGC Green Ltd (OGL) currently operate a renewable energy portfolio of 2.85 GW. With upcoming tenders for 300 MW of wind, 600 MW of solar and 1,200 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS), the combined ONGC–OGL portfolio is expected to expand to 3.70 GW in the near future.

Each expansion of its renewable footprint, ONGC noted, supports India’s energy security, cuts emissions and accelerates the country’s transition to a cleaner energy future. The company reiterated its commitment with the message: “Energy Now. Energy Next. A greener India in the making.”
