US biofuel producers’ feedstock consumption rises 6% year-on-year in August

Biofuel producers in the United States consumed around 30.702 billion pounds of raw materials in August 2026, registering a decline of 2% compared with July but an increase of nearly 6% over August 2025, according to data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) on October 30, Biodiesel Magazine reported.

Corn remained the largest feedstock used by the industry, with consumption reaching 26.8147 billion pounds in August. This was nearly 1% higher than the previous month and more than 4% above the level recorded in August last year.

Consumption of grain sorghum declined sharply to 341 million pounds, down 24% from July and 46% compared with August 2025.

Among vegetable oils, soybean oil consumption stood at 1.4 billion pounds in August, declining 17% from the previous month but increasing 34% year-on-year. More than 55% of the soybean oil used during the month went into biodiesel production, compared with 48% in July. The remaining quantity was used by renewable diesel plants.

Canola oil consumption increased to 381 million pounds, up 15% from July and 41% from August 2025. Around 72% of the total canola oil used was consumed by renewable diesel plants, compared with 64% in the previous month. The remaining quantity was used in biodiesel production.

Consumption of corn oil declined to 373 million pounds, down 18% month-on-month and 3% year-on-year. More than 91% of the corn oil was used by renewable diesel plants, while the remaining quantity went to biodiesel facilities. The share remained unchanged from July.

Among other raw materials, biofuel producers consumed 607 million gallons of yellow grease in August. Although consumption declined slightly from July, it was 95% higher than in August 2025.

Tallow consumption fell to 511 million pounds, down 34% from the previous month and 18% from a year earlier. White grease consumption declined to 34 million pounds, registering decreases of 28% month-on-month and 8% year-on-year.

Poultry fat consumption stood at 21 million pounds, down 28% from July but 50% higher than in August last year. The use of other recycled oils, fats and greases reached 26 million pounds, increasing by nearly 63% compared with the previous month.

The EIA data also showed that biofuel producers used 1 million pounds of agricultural and forestry residues, 80 million pounds of other agricultural and forestry products, 52 million pounds of other vegetable oils and 56 million pounds of other recycled raw materials during August. An additional 2 million pounds came from other biofuel feedstocks.
