Germany reaffirms partnership with India in renewable energy transition

New Delhi: Germany has reiterated its long-standing partnership with India in the renewable energy sector, highlighting nearly six decades of cooperation between the two countries.

Gottfried von Gemmingen, Head of Economic Cooperation and Development at the German Embassy in India, said renewable energy remains a key area of collaboration under the Indo-German Energy Forum. Speaking on the sidelines of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit (BRESE) 2026, he said Germany had supported India’s energy transition from its early stages, Lokmat Times reported.

He also said Germany had brought a business delegation to India to explore opportunities in the renewable energy sector and strengthen cooperation with Indian scientific institutions through joint development and innovation.

Addressing the summit at Bharat Mandapam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said energy security was closely linked to economic stability and that clean energy would play a central role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Modi said India had achieved its Paris Agreement commitment of sourcing 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2025, five years ahead of the target. The country aims to add another 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity over the next decade.

India is also targeting annual green hydrogen production of 5 million tonnes by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Meanwhile, Madagascar has expressed interest in learning from India’s experience in solar energy expansion and green hydrogen development, reflecting the country’s engagement with other nations on clean energy initiatives.
