Galgotias University strengthens green hydrogen partnership with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture; plans student internships and placements

Yamanashi, Japan: Galgotias University has held discussions with senior officials of Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture to develop a structured pathway for student internships and job placements in Japan. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Fuji Hydrogen Summit 2026 and included a closed-door meeting with Junichi Ishidera, Vice Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, Indiacsr reported.

The university delegation also met the President of the University of Yamanashi and visited a green hydrogen plant and research facilities at the university. The engagements followed the visit of a 200-member Japanese delegation to the Galgotias campus in August, which led to the signing of agreements between the institutions.

Partnership builds on August delegation visit

In August, more than 200 industrialists, CEOs, business leaders and policymakers from Japan, led by Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki, visited Uttar Pradesh for the UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026. Galgotias University hosted the delegation on its campus, marking a step towards greater academic, research and workforce collaboration between India and Japan.

During the visit, the university signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yamanashi Prefecture and a Letter of Intent with the University of Yamanashi. The agreements cover workforce mobility and green hydrogen research.

Uttar Pradesh’s engagement with Japan

The partnership has developed against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to strengthen ties with Japan under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He welcomed the Yamanashi delegation to the state and expressed Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to a long-term partnership with Japanese investors.

The Chief Minister has also appreciated Galgotias University’s MoU with Yamanashi Prefecture. The university said it is the only institution in Uttar Pradesh to have signed such an agreement with the prefecture. Its collaboration with Yamanashi is intended to extend the state-level engagement into education, research and skill development.

Participation in Fuji Hydrogen Summit

Galgotias University participated in the Fuji Hydrogen Summit as a strategic partner at the invitation of Yamanashi Prefecture. Indian participants included Awanish Awasthi, Advisor to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, along with senior representatives of the state government, Invest UP, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), IITs and companies operating in the green hydrogen sector.

The summit brought Indian participants together with the Yamanashi Prefectural Government and Japanese industry representatives to discuss green hydrogen, technology, investment, research and skill development.

On the sidelines of the event, the Galgotias delegation also held meetings with representatives from Finland, Brazil, Vietnam and Austria to explore opportunities for academic and industry collaboration.

Visits to hydrogen plant and research facilities

The university team visited a green hydrogen plant in Yamanashi to observe its production operations. It also toured research facilities at the University of Yamanashi and held discussions with the institution’s President.

According to the university, these visits helped identify areas for joint research and student placements, as well as facilities that could be accessed by Galgotias students and faculty members.

Internships from first year, followed by placement opportunities

During the closed-door meeting with senior officials of the Yamanashi Prefectural Government, both sides agreed to work towards a time-bound plan for Galgotias students. Under the proposed pathway, students would begin internships in Japan in their first year and continue gaining experience during their second and third years, with the objective of securing job placements.

The priority sectors identified include manufacturing, information technology and technology, healthcare, and hospitality.

Commenting on the discussions, Dr Dhruv Galgotia, Chief Executive Officer of Galgotias University, said the Japanese delegation’s August visit had led to the signing of MoUs, while the latest engagement had helped establish a strategic plan for students.

He said the Chief Minister’s efforts to strengthen relations between Uttar Pradesh and Japan had created a favourable setting for the collaboration. A student beginning an internship in Japan in the first year would enter the final year with practical work experience and a clearer pathway to employment, he added.

Galgotia said the university would now work with Yamanashi Prefecture and the University of Yamanashi to finalise timelines and numbers for implementing the plan.
