Ramesh, a resident of Bhogadi, Mysuru, Karnataka, has developed a portable biogas plant by effectively utilizing kitchen and dustbin waste. According to Local 18 Karnataka, he uses the biogas generated by the plant for cooking purposes in his kitchen, a practice he has maintained for the past four years. This alternative approach has eliminated the need for a gas cylinder in Ramesh’s kitchen.
As per media report, to produce the biogas for the plant installed, Ramesh kept one thousand kilograms of rice and cow dung in a drum regularly. He continued indulging in this process and then left the drum for about a month. Following this, he closed this drum with the help of another drum with a capacity of 750 litres on top of it. Then he installed a pipeline joining the drum to the kitchen and thus it is converted into methane and produced gas. The waste (cow dung and rice) is converted to methane.
Biogas, a renewable fuel, is produced through anaerobic digestion, where organic matter decomposes in the absence of oxygen, facilitated by microorganisms.
