UNIDO selects Suzuki’s India biogas project for global south technology transfer programme

Suzuki motor corporation’s biogas project in India has been chosen for a global industrial cooperation programme run by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), reports Bioenergy Insight. The project was submitted under the programme titled “Industrial cooperation programme in the Global South through technology transfer from Japan.”

This initiative, supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), aims to encourage innovation, strengthen supply chains, and develop industrial infrastructure in developing countries by helping Japanese companies carry out large-scale demonstration projects.

Suzuki’s project, called “Biogas project: Collaboration between the Indian dairy sector and Japanese automobile sector to address social issues in India,” focuses on producing biogas from cow dung in partnership with the National Dairy Development Board and a local dairy association in India. The company plans to begin operations in 2025.

Biogas, a clean and renewable fuel, can be used in compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles—currently making up about 20% of India’s passenger car market. The use of biogas is expected to help reduce emissions and promote cleaner transportation.

“This project is about more than just clean fuel,” said a Suzuki representative. “It’s also about creating local jobs, improving incomes in rural areas, and building a more self-reliant energy system.”

As part of the next steps, Suzuki will begin building new biogas plants in India, using Japanese technology to support the project’s goals and expand its reach.
