Uttar Pradesh’s first bio-CNG plant to be inaugurated in Prayagraj by CM Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh will soon have its first bio-CNG plant in Naini, Prayagraj, which is set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday. The plant is expected to be operational before the Mahakumbh festival.

This new facility can process 200 tonnes of wet garbage daily and produce 21,500 kilograms of bio-CNG and 209 tonnes of organic manure. Its first phase will handle 343 tonnes of waste, including 143 tonnes sourced from paddy straw and cow dung.

The plant is part of the Prayagraj Renewable Natural Gas project and is expected to generate an annual revenue of Rs 53 lakh. Developed as part of the government’s waste-to-wealth program, it is built on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Spanning 12.49 acres in the Arail area, the plant is managed by Enviro Resource Management Private Limited under a 25-year contract.

Built for Rs 125 crore, the project will also have a facility to produce bottles with 5, 10, and 15-kilogram capacities to store and sell CNG. These bottles will be available at petrol pumps across the city and supplied to industrial users. The plant is expected to create jobs for 200 people.

Prayagraj produces about 600 tonnes of garbage each day. Under its bioenergy policy launched in 2022, the state plans to set up 100 biogas plants. The policy provides benefits such as complete exemption from stamp duty on land purchases and full reimbursement of state GST for 10 years.

A Centre for Science and Environment report highlights that Uttar Pradesh has the highest potential for biomethane production due to its abundant organic materials. The state could produce nearly one-fourth of India’s total biogas and can establish 1,000 compressed biogas plants by using just 20% of its surplus organic materials.
