The Arequipa region in Peru has unveiled plans to position itself as a major global player in green hydrogen, aiming to meet up to 5 per cent of worldwide demand over the coming decade.
Under its 2026–2035 development strategy, the regional government has outlined a roadmap to expand renewable energy capacity and transform its energy mix to support large-scale hydrogen production, Renewables Now reported.
A key part of the plan includes the proposed Corio “Megaport of the Americas”, a deep-water port project envisioned as a major logistics hub on the Pacific coast and a gateway for South American trade. Authorities said a roadshow to attract investors for the project is scheduled for May 8.
The broader development plan also includes initiatives in agriculture, petrochemicals and technology, along with goals to improve infrastructure, education and reduce poverty.
Governor Rohel Sanchez said the strategy reflects the region’s ambition to drive long-term growth and strengthen its global economic role.
Officials say the plan is aimed at turning Arequipa into a key economic and logistics centre with international reach while supporting the transition to clean energy.
