Topsoe signs agreement with HOLBORN to provide its HydroFlex™ technology for production of SAF and renewable diesel

Topsoe has signed an agreement with HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie (HOLBORN) to provide its HydroFlex™ technology for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel at HOLBORN’s Hamburg plant. HOLBORN is a prominent oil refinery that serves Hamburg and northern Germany with fuels and heating oil, reported biofuels international.

This production aims to meet the rapidly increasing demand for SAF, according to the organization.

As per media report, the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Scenario projects that by 2030, over 10% of aviation fuel consumption must be SAF to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. However, in 2022, the International Air Transport Association estimated that global SAF production accounted for only about 0.1% to 0.15% of total jet fuel demand.

Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, stated: “We are excited to sign this agreement with HOLBORN. To support the energy transition, we need a cleaner long-distance transportation sector, and increasing the production of SAF and renewable diesel is a crucial step. HOLBORN is leading the SAF rollout in Northern Europe through its Hamburg plant, and we are proud to contribute to this effort. We look forward to implementing our technology and working with HOLBORN to boost the adoption of SAF both in Europe and globally.”

Lars Bergmann, CEO of HOLBORN, commented: “Our Hamburg facility is central to our commitment to the energy transition. It is essential that we use the best technology to meet the high standards and specifications required for this project. We are very pleased to partner with Topsoe, a proven market leader, whose technology is critical for processing our specific feedstock needs.”

HOLBORN is developing a renewable fuels complex for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and SAF within its existing refinery in Hamburg, Germany. The plant is expected to begin operations in early 2027, including the necessary infrastructure to connect with existing facilities.

Upon completion, the plant will produce approximately 220,000 tons per year of renewable diesel and SAF from waste and residue feedstocks.
