Secondary schools in Kilifi County to benefit from installation of biogas

Secondary schools in Kilifi County are poised to benefit from the installation of biogas systems as part of a plan to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal.

The county government announced yesterday that it has completed research on biogas technology, which will be implemented in 178 day and boarding secondary schools. Governor Gideon Mung’aro’s administration aims to power these institutions with renewable energy derived from organic materials such as food scraps and animal waste.

Wilfred Kenga Baya, Director of the Kilifi Department of Energy, noted that Kombeni Girls Secondary School in Rabai has already seen the benefits of this initiative.

“Both boarding and day schools consume large amounts of firewood for cooking. Our goal is for every household in Kilifi to be connected to electricity by 2026. For those who cannot afford it, we plan to provide solar systems or solar lanterns,” Baya said.
