Indonesia ready for nationwide B50 biodiesel rollout as July launch nears

Indonesia is fully prepared to implement its nationwide B50 biodiesel programme, with the mandatory 50% biodiesel blend set to be officially launched by President Prabowo Subianto in July, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Ministry spokesperson Dwi Anggia said all sectors are ready for the rollout and preparations have been completed ahead of the launch, Antara News reported.

She said the government plans to introduce the B50 mandate simultaneously across the country after successfully completing trials involving ships, trains, excavators, agricultural machinery and other vehicles.

“The implementation will cover the entire country. All of Indonesia is ready, and preparations have been completed,” Anggia said.

President Prabowo had earlier announced that the B50 programme would begin in July 2026 as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

Speaking at the 17th National Farmers and Fishers Week in Gorontalo on June 24, the president said Indonesia aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency within the next three to four years.

He said reducing reliance on imported fuel has become increasingly important as global oil supply chains continue to face disruptions caused by security concerns and shipping constraints around the Strait of Hormuz.

A day later, Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia described the B50 programme as a key step towards cutting diesel imports.

According to the minister, the policy will replace around 300,000 barrels per day of diesel demand with biodiesel produced domestically.

To ensure a smooth transition, Lahadalia has also issued a decree allowing fuel suppliers to continue distributing remaining B40 biodiesel stocks until September 30, 2026, provided they meet the required quality standards.
