Gujarat has become India’s leading state in installed renewable energy capacity, reaching 50.386 GW through rapid expansion of wind, solar and rooftop solar projects, according to a release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office on Global Energy Independence Day.
The state accounts for 17.82% of India’s total installed renewable energy capacity and ranks first in wind power and rooftop solar installations. It has an installed wind capacity of 15,850.56 MW and more than 13 lakh rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 7,408.10 MW. Gujarat also ranks second in the country in overall solar power capacity with 32,302.7 MW, ANI reported.
The state highlighted its renewable energy achievements on Global Energy Independence Day, observed on July 10, saying they support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and sourcing 50% of India’s electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
According to the release, Gujarat’s total solar capacity includes 23,259.27 MW from ground-mounted projects, 7,408.10 MW from rooftop systems, 1,434.66 MW from hybrid projects and 200.48 MW from off-grid installations, including projects under the PM KUSUM scheme.
The state hosts several major solar parks, including the 749 MW Charanka Solar Park, the 700 MW Radhanesda Solar Park and the 300 MW Dholera Solar Park. The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, planned with a total capacity of 37.35 GW, had achieved 15.54 GW of installed capacity by May 2026 and is described as the world’s largest renewable energy park.
Gujarat has also installed more than 13 lakh rooftop solar systems across residential, commercial and industrial sectors, accounting for over 21% of India’s rooftop solar installations. Under the PM KUSUM programme, 22,792 standalone off-grid solar water pumps with a combined capacity of 162.62 MW have been installed for agricultural use.
As of May 2026, Gujarat’s installed wind power capacity stood at 15,850.56 MW, with Kutch contributing 8,191.42 MW. Other major wind power districts include Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Amreli, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar and Patan.
The state has also commissioned 2,838.07 MW of wind-solar hybrid projects under its 2018 Hybrid Policy and the Gujarat Renewable Energy Policy 2023. According to the release, more than 80% of the state’s wind turbines have been installed on government-allotted land with supporting grid infrastructure.
The government estimates that Gujarat’s renewable energy sector has generated around 237,000 direct and indirect jobs. It has also launched the Akshay Urja Setu online portal to simplify grid connectivity and improve project implementation.
The release said the state’s renewable energy growth has been driven by policies covering wind, solar, waste-to-energy, small hydropower and hybrid energy projects. The Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy-2025, effective from December 24, 2025, to December 31, 2030, provides a unified framework for solar, wind, hybrid, distributed renewable energy projects and battery energy storage systems.
As of May 2026, Gujarat had 1,531 renewable energy projects under development, including 1,320 solar projects with a combined capacity of 3.377 GW, 115 wind projects with 3.913 GW and 96 hybrid projects with 4.869 GW. Together, these projects represent a pipeline capacity of 12.159 GW.
During RE-INVEST 2024 in Gandhinagar, the state announced its goal of increasing renewable energy capacity to 105 GW by 2030, contributing about 20% of India’s target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by the end of the decade.
