Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Federal National Council and Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, called for urgent legislative action in response to the accelerating climate crisis. Speaking at the Legislators Forum 2025 organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, Al Nuaimi highlighted the critical need for global parliaments to enact laws that address the environmental challenges exacerbated by rapid climate change.
Al Nuaimi pointed to 2024 as the hottest year on record, stressing the urgency of meeting the goals set out in the Paris Climate Agreement. He referenced the findings of the global stocktake at COP28, which revealed a significant gap between current commitments and the actions necessary to meet international climate targets. The summit, he said, provided a historic roadmap for transitioning to clean energy and reinforced the financial mechanisms essential to supporting this transition, as preparations for COP29 continue.
Emphasizing the importance of lawmakers, Al Nuaimi urged parliamentarians worldwide to draft policies that foster investment in renewable energy and strengthen international collaborations. “The current political momentum offers an unprecedented opportunity to drive the clean energy transition and secure a sustainable future for future generations,” he said.
Meera Sultan Al Suwaidi, Member of the Federal National Council, also addressed the forum, focusing on the UAE’s efforts in renewable energy transition. Al Suwaidi credited the UAE’s success to a forward-thinking vision, integrated strategies, and robust legislative reforms. She outlined the country’s Energy Strategy 2050, which aims for clean energy to make up 50% of the national energy mix by 2050.
During her session on “Legislative Pathways for Aligning Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs),” Al Suwaidi discussed the Federal National Council’s role in promoting environmental governance. She highlighted the council’s support for sustainability initiatives and the UAE’s commitments under COP28, reinforcing the importance of legislative action in achieving climate goals.
Looking ahead, Al Suwaidi outlined several forthcoming legislative measures, including initiatives to expand green hydrogen production, launch a regional carbon trading platform, and establish a national fund to support climate innovation. She emphasized the critical role of international parliamentary cooperation in advancing the global energy transition.
The forum also saw the appointment of Al Suwaidi as the Rapporteur for the Legislators Forum 2025. She will present the forum’s final outcome document to the IRENA General Assembly on January 13, outlining key recommendations to enhance renewable energy legislation and accelerate progress toward global climate objectives.
