DHL Express partners with CIMB to reduce CO2e through Sustainable Aviation Fuel

DHL Express has partnered with CIMB Group Holdings Berhad to integrate the banking group into its GoGreen Plus programme. This collaboration allows CIMB to utilize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to offset the CO2e emissions associated with its international shipments. The initiative will be implemented across Malaysia and Singapore.

CIMB acknowledges the importance of aligning business operations with climate action. In September 2022, the Group announced a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 for Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect greenhouse gases from transportation and distribution activities. DHL’s GoGreen Plus service plays a pivotal role in facilitating cleaner operations and supporting the broader SAF ecosystem’s expansion.

SAF represents a promising avenue for decarbonizing the aviation industry. Derived from alternative sources like used cooking oil, waste, and hydrogen, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 80 percent over its lifecycle compared to conventional jet fuel. Through their partnership with DHL Express, CIMB anticipates a 20 percent reduction in carbon emissions from their time-definite international air shipments originating from Malaysia and Singapore. These reductions are verified by Société Générale de Surveillance, an independent auditor, and count towards CIMB’s Scope 3 carbon footprint.

“Many of our customers view sustainability as an essential business priority today. In the Asia Pacific region alone, over 12,000 customers have enrolled in our GoGreen Plus service, and this number continues to grow steadily,” said Ken Lee, CEO DHL Express Asia Pacific. “As a leading express logistics provider, we connect people and businesses globally. GoGreen Plus provides a critical avenue for businesses to reduce carbon emissions, and we anticipate more to join us.”

“SAF is widely recognized as a viable solution for decarbonizing aviation. However, there is still significant progress to be made, as SAF currently constitutes only 0.1 percent of aviation fuel consumption today,” noted Julian Neo, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei. “We commend CIMB for their leadership in sustainability and are pleased to partner with them on this important initiative. This collaboration inspires us to accelerate efforts to enhance SAF availability, accessibility, and affordability to help our customers achieve their environmental goals.”

“Sustainability is a core focus at CIMB, underpinned by our 2050 net-zero commitments. In our journey to achieve these goals, we advocate strategic partnerships and innovative solutions,” commented Gurdip Singh Sidhu, CEO of CIMB Malaysia and CIMB Bank Berhad. “CIMB is delighted to collaborate with DHL on their sustainable fuel initiative, which supports us in mitigating our Scope 3 carbon emissions and advancing towards our 2050 net-zero targets. DHL’s innovative approach in offering such solutions to key clients is commendable and will accelerate the commercialization of sustainable aviation technology.”

GoGreen Plus, launched in February 2023, is part of DHL Group’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, supported by significant SAF agreements with bp, Neste, and World Energy. Given that the air freight network accounts for approximately 70 percent of the company’s carbon footprint, sustainable air transportation solutions are essential for greener logistics.
