Nagpur’s Rs 300-crore waste-to-energy project to produce 28 tonnes of biogas daily: Fadnavis

Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday reviewed the progress of the country’s first Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Processing Facility at Bhandewadi and said the project would play a crucial role in transforming Nagpur into a garbage-free city while generating clean energy from municipal waste, ANI reported.

Being developed by the Kewa Sus Bade Group through private investment of around Rs 300 crore, the facility is designed to process approximately 1,200 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste every day and produce nearly 28 tonnes of biogas daily.

During his visit to the project site, Fadnavis said the integrated waste processing facility is being implemented in three phases and is expected to become fully operational by August this year. The project will scientifically process both wet and dry waste collected from across Nagpur to generate biogas, compost fertiliser and fuel pellets.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the Chief Minister described it as the first project of its kind in the country and said it would serve as a model for sustainable urban waste management. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has provided 30 acres of land for the facility and will receive an annual royalty of Rs 15 lakh from the sale of gas produced at the plant.

The project is expected to substantially reduce landfill dependency by converting municipal waste into useful products and energy. Biogas generated from the facility will be upgraded into green fuel and used to operate nearly 198 city buses, contributing to cleaner urban transportation and lower carbon emissions.

Fadnavis said the project has been developed under a public-private partnership model, ensuring that no additional financial burden falls on the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. At the same time, the facility will help reduce the city’s daily expenditure on handling and disposing of nearly 1,300 metric tonnes of waste, ANI stated.

Apart from biogas production, the plant will manufacture high-quality compost fertiliser for agriculture and fuel pellets for industrial applications, creating a comprehensive waste-to-resource ecosystem.

Expressing confidence in the project’s potential, the Chief Minister said the Bhandewadi facility would emerge as a national benchmark for integrated waste management, renewable energy generation and environmental sustainability.
