Nirjuli: A biogas plant with a capacity of 30 cubic metres has been inaugurated at the Central Cattle Breeding Farm (CCBF) in Nirjuli, marking a step toward cleaner energy use at the facility, Arunachal Times reported.
The plant, which consists of two units, was inaugurated on Friday by Planning Commissioner RK Sharma in the presence of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Secretary YVVJ Rajasekhar, along with officials from the Arunachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (APEDA) and the department.
The project has been set up by APEDA in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development department.
Officials said the initiative was taken following directions from Minister Gabriel D Wangsu, who had asked for the project to be completed quickly so that families living in the complex could use biogas for cooking instead of relying on LPG.
The minister has also asked the department to prepare a plan to expand the capacity of the plant and set up similar units at other farms across the state.
He said proper use of cattle waste can help produce clean energy, reduce pollution, support organic farming and lower dependence on LPG. He also encouraged farmers and field staff to adopt such models at the local level.
Project in-charge Dr Taba Heli described the plant as a step toward sustainable living, turning waste into useful energy while reducing reliance on conventional fuels.
The cattle breeding farm has around 150 animals, which produce about 5 to 6 quintals of cow dung daily. Earlier, most of the waste was dried and used as manure. With the new plant, the dung is now being converted into biogas for cooking and lighting, along with nutrient-rich slurry that can improve soil fertility.
The farm also has residential quarters for more than 12 families, whose kitchens have now been connected to the biogas system, reducing their use of LPG.
