A new trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom is set to create $5 billion in new export opportunities for American producers including over $700 million in ethanol, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday, reports Times-Republic.
The agreement, unveiled jointly by Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, aims to lower trade barriers and expand market access, though several details remain under negotiation.
“The deal includes billions of dollars in increased market access for American exports, especially in agriculture,” Trump said at a White House press conference. “It will significantly improve access for U.S. beef, ethanol, and virtually all farm products by removing unfair non-tariff barriers.”
Starmer, who joined the press event by phone, said the agreement would “boost trade between and across our countries,” adding that it would protect and create jobs by opening markets for both sides.
A White House fact sheet said the deal includes commitments to:
Export over $700 million in ethanol and $250 million in other agricultural goods,
Illinois Farm Bureau President Brian Duncan welcomed the progress but urged further action. “We’re thankful conversations are taking place, but more needs to be done to ensure U.S. farmers have fair access to the UK market,” he said.
“This is just the first of many trade deals,” Trump said, adding that additional agreements are being negotiated. He also noted recent talks between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese officials in Switzerland. “China very much wants to make a deal,” he said.
British Ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mandelson said the agreement sets the stage for further cooperation. “This deal provides a very good launchpad for what we will build in the future,” he said.
