Topsoe has signed an agreement with HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie (HOLBORN) to provide its HydroFlex™ technology for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel at HOLBORN’s Hamburg plant. HOLBORN is a prominent oil refinery that serves Hamburg and northern Germany with fuels and heating oil, reported biofuels international.
This production aims to meet the rapidly increasing demand for SAF, according to the organization.
As per media report, the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Scenario projects that by 2030, over 10% of aviation fuel consumption must be SAF to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. However, in 2022, the International Air Transport Association estimated that global SAF production accounted for only about 0.1% to 0.15% of total jet fuel demand.

HOLBORN is developing a renewable fuels complex for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and SAF within its existing refinery in Hamburg, Germany. The plant is expected to begin operations in early 2027, including the necessary infrastructure to connect with existing facilities.
Upon completion, the plant will produce approximately 220,000 tons per year of renewable diesel and SAF from waste and residue feedstocks.
