Odisha has taken a major step in expanding its renewable energy capacity with the signing of a joint venture agreement between NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) and the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) to develop 1,000 MW of clean energy projects across the state.
The partnership is aimed at strengthening Odisha’s renewable power infrastructure while supporting long-term energy transition goals, improving energy security and enhancing grid reliability, Saur Energy reported.
Under the agreement, the joint venture will build a diversified renewable energy portfolio combining generation and energy storage technologies.
The proposed 1,000 MW portfolio includes 525 MW of Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), 250 MW of wind power capacity and 225 MW of floating solar projects.
The inclusion of energy storage infrastructure is expected to play a critical role in supporting Odisha’s renewable energy ambitions. Pumped storage and battery systems can help address variability in renewable generation, improve grid stability and enable better integration of wind and solar power into the electricity network.
The agreement comes as Odisha increases investment in renewable energy, grid modernisation and emerging green industries.
In the Budget for 2026–27, the state allocated ₹4,505 crore to the energy sector to strengthen transmission and distribution infrastructure and support the transition toward cleaner energy systems.
The allocation also includes support for green hydrogen and green ammonia development, expansion of rooftop solar installations and energy efficiency initiatives.
These measures are intended to create the infrastructure needed to support a more resilient and sustainable energy network.
Alongside project development, Odisha has also emerged as a destination for clean energy manufacturing investment.
Recently, the High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA), chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, approved 20 investment proposals worth ₹76,612 crore across multiple sectors.
Among them is a ₹10,000 crore investment by Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited to establish an ingot, wafer and solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing facility in Ganjam district.
The HLCA also cleared a ₹1,709.81 crore proposal by Saatvik Solar Industries Private Limited to develop a solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing project in the same district.
The approved investments are expected to create employment opportunities for more than five lakh people across Odisha.
With the latest joint venture, Odisha is positioning itself to expand renewable generation capacity while building the supporting infrastructure required for a more diversified and reliable clean energy system.
