New Delhi: India is set to introduce its first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train, marking a new step in the country’s transition toward cleaner railway transportation.
The hydrogen fuel-cell-based train has been designed as a smoke-free and emission-free alternative and is equipped with a 1,200-kilowatt propulsion system. The train is expected to operate at a maximum speed of 75 kilometres per hour.
Indian Railways has approved the operation of the 10-coach train on the Jind–Sonipat section under Northern Railway.
The project represents India’s entry into hydrogen-powered rail mobility using domestically developed technology and aligns with broader efforts to promote cleaner energy solutions in the transport sector.
Once operational, the train is expected to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen fuel-cell technology as an alternative to conventional railway propulsion systems while supporting the rail network’s sustainability goals.
