Transport operator Nobina will introduce 27 new biogas-powered buses into service for regional public transport operations in Sweden under an agreement with public transport authority Skånetrafiken, reinforcing the region’s continued focus on lower-emission mobility solutions.
The new buses will operate on the Malmö–Lund and Kristianstad routes and are designed to support regional travel while improving passenger comfort and reducing environmental impact, Biomass Magazine reported.
Powered by compressed biogas, the vehicles are expected to deliver lower emissions and quieter operations compared with conventional alternatives. Biogas is produced from waste materials and is considered a renewable fuel source that can contribute to reducing carbon emissions while strengthening local fuel supply systems.
A significant share of Sweden’s compressed biogas is produced domestically, allowing economic benefits to remain closer to local communities where the fuel is consumed.
The buses have been customised to meet Skånetrafiken’s operating requirements for longer-distance services. Features include coach-style seating, onboard toilet facilities and additional interior upgrades aimed at improving the travel experience.
The new vehicles will be built by Irizar and supplied as the Scania Irizar i4 model, marking the first deployment of this model in Sweden’s public transport network. While new to Sweden, the model has already been introduced in several European markets, particularly in Southern Europe where biogas use is more established.
Helena Ericson, Fleet Manager at Nobina, said sustainability remains an important consideration for the company, alongside vehicle reliability and ease of operation to support drivers, passengers and daily transport services.
Rutger Hörndahl, Key Account Manager at Scania Sverige, said biogas offers a circular and locally produced transport solution with immediate climate benefits, adding that the Scania Irizar i4 combines comfort, energy efficiency and suitability for regional operations.
The buses will be delivered through collaboration with Irizar’s Swedish representative, LECAB Lastbilar AB, to support production, delivery and operational rollout across the region.
With the latest order, Skånetrafiken will further expand its fleet of Scania biogas buses and continue its long-term investment in renewable fuel-based public transportation.
