Compressed biogas plant to be set up in Muzaffarpur industrial area

Muzaffarpur: A compressed biogas plant will be established in the Bariyarpur industrial area of Muzaffarpur in Bihar, with land allotted to a Gujarat-based company for the project, Live Hindustan reported.

The Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA) has allocated nearly six acres of land, measuring about 2,37,402 square feet, for setting up the facility. The company has been asked to complete the installation of the plant within six months.

Officials said the project is expected to generate employment for around 250 to 300 people in and around the Bariyarpur area. Farmers in the district are also likely to benefit as the plant will use agricultural residues and cattle dung as raw material for producing compressed biogas.

The gas produced at the plant can be used for domestic purposes as well as fuel for vehicles, similar to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Authorities said the project will also help improve waste management and promote the use of clean energy, while reducing dependence on CNG. It is expected to be the first such biogas plant in North Bihar.

The state’s industry department had granted a no-objection certificate to the Gujarat-based company in December 2025 for setting up the plant.

Biogas is produced through a digestion process in which organic materials such as cattle dung, agricultural waste and other biodegradable matter are broken down to generate gas rich in methane, which can be used as fuel.

Officials said the project could help improve waste management, promote cleaner energy, provide additional income to farmers and create employment in rural areas.
