China’s Shougang LanzaTech partners with Sinopec units to develop 50,000-tonne SAF project in China

Beijing Shougang LanzaTech Technology Co. Ltd. has partnered with two Sinopec entities to develop a 50,000-tonne-per-year sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility in Shizuishan, Ningxia, China, using ethanol produced from industrial off-gases as the primary feedstock, reported Tip Ranks

The agreement involves Sinopec’s Research Institute of Petrochemical Processing and Sinopec Ningbo Engineering. The proposed facility will have an annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes and use an industrial off-gas-to-ethanol-to-SAF pathway.

Under the collaboration, the three parties will also work on developing technologies to convert carbon dioxide into ethanol and explore downstream applications, including bio-based ethylene.

The project aims to combine Shougang LanzaTech’s expertise in converting industrial off-gases into ethanol through microbial fermentation with Sinopec’s research capabilities, proprietary technologies and engineering expertise.

The partnership is expected to broaden feedstock options, improve the value of bio-based products and strengthen the company’s presence in the sustainable fuels market. It also aims to facilitate access to domestic and international markets for sustainable aviation fuel and other low-carbon products.

For Shougang LanzaTech, the agreement marks a strategic expansion beyond industrial gas-based ethanol production into higher-value applications such as SAF and bio-based chemicals. The initiative is also aligned with China’s broader decarbonisation objectives and its efforts to develop low-carbon energy and materials industries.
