A 2.1 MW biogas plant operated by Serbia-based Alter Biogas Jato has increased its electricity generation capacity by around 6% through a waste heat recovery project developed in partnership with German cleantech company Orcan Energy, Balkan Green Energy News reported.
Located in Secanj, in Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina, the plant produces biogas from organic biomass, including maize silage and slurry. The project recovers thermal energy from two Jenbacher J320 biogas engines with a combined capacity of 2,122 kW and converts it into additional electricity.
Alter Biogas Jato Director Natasa Zjajić said the installation was completed without disrupting plant operations and runs autonomously, enabling the facility to generate more electricity from the same biogas input.
Orcan Energy Chief Executive Officer Andreas Sichert said Serbia and the wider Balkan region were important markets for the company, with its technology aimed at helping biogas operators increase electricity generation.
The project is supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy under the Renewable Energy Solutions Programme of the German Energy Solutions Initiative.
It is Orcan Energy’s first commissioned project in Serbia and its second in Eastern Europe, following an installation in Bulgaria.
