Cemex partners with WtEnergy to turn non-recyclable waste and biomass into clean energy

Cemex Ventures has invested in Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions (WtEnergy), a startup focused on converting non-recyclable solid waste and biomass into clean energy, as part of efforts to support lower-carbon technologies in cement production, Cement Intelligence reported.

The venture capital arm of Cemex said the funding will help expand WtEnergy’s technology, which generates low-carbon synthesis gas (syngas), clean hydrogen and other bioproducts. These solutions are expected to aid the adoption of alternative energy sources across Cemex’s global clinker and cement manufacturing operations, a key element of the company’s decarbonisation plans.

“WtEnergy represents exactly the type of solutions we seek to promote within our circular economy and clean energy strategy,” said Alfredo Carrato, investment manager at Cemex Ventures. “With this new investment, we are reinforcing our commitment to supporting startups that are redefining the industry’s energy future and generating tangible value across the cement value chain.”

Cemex Ventures noted that the decision to deepen its involvement with WtEnergy follows technical advancements and increasing institutional support. Working with Cemex, the startup has secured funding from the European Union to develop advanced waste-to-fuel conversion technology. It is also leading a €10 million project at Cemex’s Alcanar plant in Spain to convert biowaste into high-purity clean hydrogen.

The investment aligns with Cemex’s “Future in Action” programme, which aims for net-zero CO₂ emissions. Alternative fuels with high biomass content have been identified as an important factor in achieving the company’s 2030 decarbonisation targets.
