Delhi civic body cracks down on polluters as air quality worsens

New Delhi: In a push to address rising pollution levels during GRAP-3, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has intensified enforcement, sanitation and anti-pollution efforts across several parts of the city. The measures include sealing unlawful polluting units, clearing areas marked for poor sanitation, issuing fines for burning biomass and removing encroachments that add to congestion and pollution, reports The New Indian Express.

The MCD has also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) for failing to follow the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016, and the bylaws notified in 2018. An inspection on November 13 found that the college was “repeatedly disregarding the required rules,” according to the notice issued.

To tackle industrial pollution, officials from the MCD West Zone, along with the DPCC, BSES and the SDM, carried out a sealing drive against unauthorised polluting units in Bindapur, Ward 116. Four industrial establishments were sealed — two coal-based bhatti units, a chemical factory and a noodle production unit — for violating environmental regulations. Authorities said these units were significant sources of air and water pollution in the area, prompting strict action to ensure adherence to pollution-control norms.

Acting on a complaint posted on social media about poor sanitation near the railway tracks at Azadpur Railway Station, the MCD Keshavpuram Zone undertook a major cleanliness drive. The affected 1.5-acre triangular patch, located on Railway land and surrounded by jhuggi clusters, had been strewn with municipal waste, leading to environmental deterioration.
