New Delhi: India is on track to overtake Germany as the world’s third-largest wind energy producer, with installed wind power capacity expected to exceed 107 GW by 2030, a senior government official said on Wednesday, PTI reported.
Speaking at the curtain-raiser event for Windenergy India 2026, Rajesh Kulhari, Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said India has already surpassed Brazil and currently has around 58 GW of installed wind capacity.
Germany has around 77 GW of installed capacity, while India is expected to cross that level before 2030 and reach more than 107 GW, he said.
China currently leads the global wind power market with nearly 700 GW of installed capacity, followed by the US with more than 160 GW. Germany ranks third, with India in fourth position.
Kulhari said India’s energy transition is moving beyond simply adding generation capacity and is increasingly focused on developing a complete industrial ecosystem.
“This is about building a complete industrial ecosystem that creates skilled jobs, drives wind manufacturing exports, guarantees energy security and lowers system costs by reducing dependence on fossil fuels,” he said.
Dinesh Jagdale, Secretary of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and President-Corporate Affairs & Retail Business at Suzlon Energy, said the industry is targeting 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030 and 155 GW by 2035.
India’s annual domestic wind turbine manufacturing capacity has increased to 24 GW from around 10 GW in 2014. The sector currently has an estimated 70-80% domestic value addition.
Wind equipment exports crossed Rs 12,000 crore in FY2025-26, registering nearly 50% growth. The MNRE has also launched WT-MARUT, described as India’s first wind supply-chain portal, to strengthen the domestic manufacturing ecosystem and support exports.
Suman Nag, Global Business Development, Envision Energy India and Executive Council member of IWTMA, said the growth reflects the increasing maturity of India’s wind industry and its expanding role as a global manufacturing and export hub.
Windenergy India 2026, the country’s flagship wind energy platform, will be held from October 7 to 9 at the Chennai Trade Centre. Organised by IWTMA and PDA Ventures, with support from the Ministry of Power and MNRE, the event is expected to attract more than 20,000 attendees, 400 delegates and 350 exhibitors from over 30 countries, PTI stated.
