OMC Power targeting 1 GWp RE capacity, attracts investment from Honda

In a major development for India’s clean energy and storage sector, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. has made a strategic equity investment in OMC Power, a distributed renewable energy (DRE) company advancing grassroots energy transition. The partnership combines Honda’s global technological expertise with OMC’s deep rural and distributed energy experience, accelerating the company’s goal of building a 1 GWp clean energy portfolio.

According to a press release, the alliance aligns with Honda’s global vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and supports India’s clean energy transition and circular economy objectives.

Rohit Chandra, Co-Founder and CEO of OMC Power, said, “This partnership with Honda marks a pivotal moment in OMC’s journey. Together, we are unlocking a new era of sustainable innovation by integrating advanced energy storage solutions into our distributed energy systems. This initiative reflects the vision of Make in India and Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, driving local innovation, strengthening energy security, and enabling inclusive growth. By combining global expertise with India’s entrepreneurial spirit, we are building scalable solutions that will shape the future of storage-based clean energy.”

The partnership will repurpose Honda’s detachable and portable batteries, originally used in electric two- and three-wheelers, for stationary storage applications. Integrated with OMC’s systems, these batteries are already supplying reliable power to remote schools, clinics, telecom towers, small businesses, and solar rooftops. The model is expected to launch in January 2026, extending the lifecycle of EV batteries while addressing the growing demand for storage-based energy solutions.

Minoru Kato, Executive Officer and Chief Officer for Motorcycle and Power Products Operations at Honda Motor Co., Ltd., said, “Honda believes electrified mobility products can contribute not only as transportation but also to advancing energy systems for our customers and their communities. In India, where electric motorcycles are gaining momentum, Honda aims to establish a resource-circulating value chain by repurposing end-of-life electric motorcycle batteries. This initiative addresses societal needs while enhancing daily life for people.”

The alliance will co-develop advanced energy storage solutions, creating a new business vertical for OMC. It will support large-scale deployment for mini grid stabilization, telecom infrastructure, rooftop hybrid solar solutions, and other distributed energy applications.

The partnership complements OMC’s four core business areas: rooftop hybrid solar systems, energy storage for telecom networks, commercial and industrial solar systems, and mini grid technologies. It also opens new opportunities in India’s electric mobility value chain, positioning OMC as a key player in battery reuse and Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) models.

With Honda’s strategic investment, OMC Power is set to fast-track its 1 GWp clean energy portfolio and contribute significantly to India’s goal of becoming a global leader in decentralized energy solutions.
