Wasco Greenergy powers up one of Malaysia’s largest biomass steam energy systems to drive industrial decarbonisation

KUALA LUMPUR: Wasco Greenergy Berhad (“Greenergy” or “the Group”), a market-leading renewable energy system provider in Malaysia, has successfully installed and commissioned one of Malaysia’s largest biomass steam energy systems at a pioneer paper manufacturing facility in Kajang, Selangor, with a built-up area of approximately 3,000 square metres. The project reflects Greenergy’s steadfast commitment to support the industry’s transition towards more efficient, sustainable energy solutions, the company stated in a press release.

Designed and manufactured by its subsidiary, Wasco Thermal Sdn Bhd (WTSB), the biomass steam energy system is built to deliver high-efficiency and power generation at scale. Fuelled primarily by treated Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB), the system is engineered to achieve utilisation rate of over 80%, reducing reliance on conventional fuels and the national grid.

It incorporates a cogeneration (CHP) configuration that produces both renewable electricity and steam energy within an integrated process, improving overall efficiency and supporting operational reliability. This enables industrial users to optimise energy use while advancing their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments. Its automated design ensures consistent performance across varying operating conditions within the paper mill.

Furthermore, the system is projected to generate up to 500,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable thermal energy annually, substantially reducing CO₂ emissions while supporting industrial clients in enhancing long-term energy planning and operational efficiency. It also creates opportunities for carbon credit generation, reinforcing the role of biomass in supporting low-carbon industrial operations.

Lee Yee Chong, Chief Executive Officer of Wasco Greenergy said, “This project proves that large-scale biomass energy is not just environmentally sound, but also commercially compelling. By empowering industries to convert agricultural waste into a reliable energy source, we are supporting Malaysia’s ambitions under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and aligning with the objectives of the National Biomass Action Plan. In doing so, we are accelerating the shift towards a low-carbon energy system while enabling more resilient and cost-efficient operations for our clients.”

Through its Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) services and innovative Build-Own-Operate (BOO) models, Greenergy provides industrial clients with flexible pathways to adopt renewable energy. The Group continues to drive the adoption of biomass energy across Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

The project has contributed positively to the Group’s financial performance for the past two years and cemented its position as a leading green energy provider in the growing Southeast Asia market.
