Residents halt construction of biogas plant

Ludhiana: Residents of Bagga Kalan village in Ludhiana have stopped the construction of a biogas plant in the Ladhowal area, expressing fears about the plant’s potential impact on health and the environment. Villagers claim that chemical waste from the plant could pollute groundwater and lead to health problems, reported Tribune India.

The protest, organized by the Sangharsh Committee of Bagga Kalan, escalated on Sunday as villagers set up a permanent demonstration at the site. Sukhdev Singh Bhundri, coordinator of the committee, said the protesters locked the gates, blocking construction materials from entering.

The movement has gained widespread support, with residents from nearby villages joining the protests. Despite officials’ efforts to negotiate, the protesters remain firm in their demand to halt the project, insisting that the plant cannot be allowed to operate under any circumstances.

The Sangharsh Committee issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to protecting the community’s health and environment. Villagers have vowed to continue their protest until their concerns are addressed and the plant’s construction is permanently stopped.
