Russia will introduce a national certification system for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the initiative of Gazprom Neft, aimed at assessing and certifying reductions in carbon emissions throughout the fuel’s lifecycle, AK&M reported.
The system is expected to provide an alternative to foreign certification centres and assess emissions from SAF production through its use by the end user. The certification will cover participants across the SAF supply chain, including agricultural producers, suppliers and processors of vegetable raw materials, fuel and logistics companies, and airlines.
According to Gazprom Neft, certification will become an important requirement for Russian low-carbon aviation fuel to be used on international routes from 2027 under requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
From 2027, Russian airlines will be required to use SAF on international flights or compensate for their environmental impact by purchasing carbon units.
The proposed Russian certification system will use a common methodology to calculate greenhouse gas emission reductions from the production and use of SAF. The methodology will be developed on a platform open to industry participants.
The certification system will form part of Russia’s national project on technological support for the bioeconomy.
SAF is a lower-carbon aviation fuel that can be produced from feedstocks including esters and fatty acids. Its use can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation by up to 80% compared with conventional kerosene, according to the company.
Gazprom Neft is an oil producer and refiner within the Gazprom Group. The company reported a 73.7% increase in net profit attributable to shareholders to RUB 286.1 billion in the first half of 2026, compared with RUB 164.75 billion in the same period a year earlier.
Revenue increased 6% to RUB 1.88 trillion, while operating expenses fell 5% to RUB 1.48 trillion. Operating profit rose 93% to RUB 394.98 billion, while adjusted EBITDA stood at RUB 727.5 billion.
