Gujarat plans rooftop solar installations on 15,000 government buildings

Gandhinagar: Gujarat plans to install grid-connected rooftop solar systems on 15,000 government buildings during 2026-27, adding around 65 MW of renewable energy capacity, Climate Change Minister Arjun Modhwadia said on Monday, ANI reported.

The programme, being implemented by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) under the Climate Change Department since 2011-12, is aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy, reducing dependence on conventional electricity and lowering power costs for government offices.

During 2025-26, rooftop solar systems were installed on 1,377 government buildings, adding 17.1 MW of renewable energy capacity. By March 2026, the programme had covered 6,014 government buildings, with total installed capacity reaching 95 MW.

“The biggest expansion of rooftop solar installation on government buildings is taking place this year as we plan to install systems on 15,000 government buildings. The proposed expansion is expected to add around 65 MW of solar capacity,” Modhwadia said.

The expansion is being carried out under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of Gujarat’s efforts to increase the use of solar power across government infrastructure.

Minister of State for Climate Change Pravin Mali said the installations would help government offices reduce their use of conventional electricity and lower power expenditure. They would also help reduce pollution linked to conventional power generation, he said.

The Gujarat government has allocated ₹314 crore for the programme in 2026-27. Of this, ₹278 crore is for general government buildings, ₹3 crore for buildings under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department and ₹33 crore for buildings managed by the Tribal Development Department, GEDA Director Dharmendra Patel said.

The programme covers government buildings under the jurisdiction of the Gujarat government. The rooftop solar projects receive 100% support for their capital cost from the annual budget allocation of the Climate Change Department.

Digital system to monitor solar installations

Gujarat has also introduced an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based Renewable Energy Monitoring System this year to monitor renewable energy installations on government buildings.

The system uses smart meters, sensors and gateways connected through GPRS, 4G and Ethernet networks. It can send automatic alerts and records performance data every 15 minutes, providing up to 96 readings a day, Modhwadia said.

The state government said the monitoring system currently tracks 142.5 MW of solar capacity and 68.3 MW of wind capacity.

The rooftop solar programme is part of Gujarat’s wider renewable energy expansion. According to the latest data cited by the state government from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Gujarat has 47,178 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, the highest among states in the country.

Solar and wind power account for a major share of Gujarat’s renewable energy capacity as the state continues to expand clean-energy generation and related infrastructure.

The government said expanding rooftop solar on public buildings, along with digital monitoring of renewable energy installations, will help improve energy efficiency and support Gujarat’s move towards a cleaner energy system.
